Director: Seth Gordon
Cast: The Rock, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario
Here we go with another remake/reboot that no one asked for. Based on the cheesy 90’s syndicated show, Baywatch is about a team is lifeguards, that finds themselves uncovering mysteries and solving crimes that are happening right on the beach.
The Rock takes over for David Hasselhoff as “Mitch Buchanan”, head Lifeguard of a beautiful California beach. It’s now time for new recruitments to try out for positions as lifeguards and the head of the organization is forcing Buchanan to hire a self centered Olympic hot shot swimmer named “Matt Brody”, played by Zac Efron.
Now, I’m not sure what would qualify for a “good” Baywatch movie, considering the source material, but I really liked this movie. I wasn’t a fan of the older TV show, so I wasn’t holding on to any preconceived notions. The chemistry between The Rock and Zac Efron was great. The supporting characters were all really good, especially Alexandra Daddario as Summer and Kelly Rohrbach as CJ.
The plot was ridiculously simple, the villain was basic (although played by the stunningly beautiful Priyanka Chopra), but they acknowledge how silly these situations were, and I loved that. I thought this movie did a great job of making fun of itself, while still servicing the “Lifeguards as heroes” storyline. I was generally surprised at how much fun this was.
